UP Meat Traders Support CM Yogi Adityanath, Says Minister After Meeting

Days after the crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses, the striking meat traders of Uttar Pradesh had a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath this evening. While the four-day old strike was not immediately called off, the traders hinted at a positive decision, saying an announcement will be made after internal meetings.

After the meeting, state minister Siddharth Nath Singh said the meat traders have supported the Chief Minister and said as citizens of India it was their "duty" to see that nothing illegal is allowed.

The meat traders have been on a strike in protest against the police action, which allegedly didn't spare traders who were selling chicken and fish. After a chorus of protests and media reports, the Chief Minister had clarified that action was to be taken only against slaughterhouses that were operating illegally -- without proper permissions.

The government's move has found support from the All India Meat Association, which has hailed the Chief Minister for following his "raj dharma".

"Meat traders were subjected to injustice by the BSP and SP governments," Haji Shakeel Qureshi, the representative of All India Meat Association and All India Meat and Livestock Exporters' Association  was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

"The new chief minister is following his raj dharma (the duty of a ruler), and it is wrong to comment on the one who is pursuing his raj dharma... He is trying to bring the system back on track and needs to be thanked," he said.

Action, he said, is being taken only against illegal slaughterhouses and there is no report of action against any legal abattoir, he said.

Yogi Adityanath has showered kind words and thank-you gifts on each of about 115 functionaries of the BJP in UP for their contribution to the party's thumping win in the recent assembly election which led to his anointment as chief minister. 

Thirty-five members, including senior functionaries such as deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, and the party's general secretary (organisation) Sunil Bansal, have got a Samsung smartphone worth Rs 8,000 apiece and a saffron shawl as a token of appreciation from the CM. Eighty other middle and lower-level functionaries, including the party's state spokespersons who were a regular fixture in TV debates, have got a Titan watch worth about Rs 3,000 and a white shawl each from the CM. 

"He personally felicitated each party functionary on Wednesday as soon as he stepped into the CM's official residence at 5, KD Marg, saying he was here only due to the hard work done by the party members in UP," a senior BJP functionary told ET.

CM Yogi Adityanath gets Z Plus security, joins elite club of 450 VIPs.

The Centre has accorded the top category 'Z+' VVIP armed security cover to newly-appointed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The cover will be provided by a special commando team of the CISF along with a small contingent of the Uttar Pradesh police.

"The Chief Minister's security has been bolstered and he will now be secured by a strong team of CISF commandos everytime he moves across the country. A similar commando contingent will be deployed at his official residence," a senior officer said.

As part of the new and upgraded security paraphernalia, Adityanath will have about 25-28 commandos accompanying him with sophisticated weapons at all times he is mobile and his convoy will have pilot and escort vehicles armed with jammers. The review in security category of Adityanath comes after the Intelligence Bureau’s threat perception report flagged upgradation of his protective cover.

Under the 'Y' cover, he was accompanied by about 2-3 commandos when he travelled, officials said. A Central Industrial Security Force squad from its Special Security Group (SSG) has recently taken charge of his security in Lucknow, they said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the state assembly for the first time since taking oath as the CM. Addressing the Vidhan Sabha, Yogi Adityanath said that no community in the state would be discriminated against as the government and the opposition will work united, towards public welfare. He further also congratulated independent MLA, Hriday Narayan Dixit on becoming the speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. He then spoke to the BJP MLAs and ministers in the state and their use of the red light on government vehicles. Adityanath acknowledged that these leaders were in charge of the 22 crore people of Uttar Pradesh and thus were entitled to a few privileges but they were to use these privileges with caution.

He said that the government officials and ministers could use the red light on their vehicles for official purposes but not when they were travelling with their family or for personal use. He further said that the public representatives must use the power and privilege allotted to them by the government with care and caution. He further added that no family or friends of these government officials, ministers, MLAs etc would interfere in the government activities in the state. Before coming to the Vidhan Sabha for the address, the CM had met with all BJP leaders and asked them not to strongarm the police or the public. The police have also been asked to stay away from commenting on social media.Although Yogi Adityanath’s ascension to the throne of the Chief Minister of the largest state in India came as a surprise/shock to many, the CM, since taking his oath has set upon a path to fulfil all the poll promises that Bhartiya Janata Party had made during the election campaign. Although certain promises such as the ban on illegal slaughterhouses and the introduction of Anti-Romeo squads have received a mixed response from the public. All the slaughterhouse owners in the state have gone on an indefinite strike after the government implemented the ban. Similarly, the Anti-Romeo squads have been accused of moral policing despite senior police officials’ repeated warnings.

Aditya Nath Yogi , recently appointed chief minister of Uttar Pradesh , has a close Gujarat connection apart from his ties with PM Narendra Modi. The erstwhile mahant of a math (ashram) of Nath sampradaya in Visnagar, Mahant Gulabnath Bapu, who was born as a Muslim with the name Gul Mohammad Pathan, was the 'gurubhai' of today's UP CM, considered a Hindu hardliner.

Mahant Avaidyanath , the guru of Aditya Nath, was also the guru of Gulabnath Bapu. Their relation was so strong that when Gulabnath, 86, breathed his last, Aditya Nath came to Visnagar, Gujarat, to perform his last rites on December 6, 2016, and he also appointed the new mahant of the math, Sankarnath. The math runs temples and annakshetra (place providing free meals) in Visnagar and Vadgam.

Gulabnath had taken diksha at the age of 18 from Mahant Balaknath at Vadgam.

"Bapu was the sixth generation in guru-shishya lineage. His association with Mahant Avaidyanath of Gorakhpur math and guru of Aditya Nath Yogi+ was very old due to the dynamics of Nath sampradaya." said Sankarnath, the newly appointed mahant of the Visnagar math. 

"Bapu also considered Avaidyanath his guru and thus he considered Aditya Nath as his gurubhai," Sankarnath said.

"Bapu was invited to Gorakhpur for every major event. When he went there last year, Aditya Nath had him felicitated by PM Narendra Modi," said Shankarnath.

Aditya Nath visits the math at Visnagar at least 2-3 times annually, said Shankarnath, adding that any Gujarat visit by the yogi starts from Visnagar.

"Yogi used to phone regularly to get updates on Bapu's health. It is not just about the Nath sampradaya connection as there are other places in Gujarat with presence of the sampradaya, but he feels connected to this place," Sankarnath added.

Mahant Sankarnath has high hopes about the UP CM.

Yogi effect on Jharkhand, State orders strict ban on illegal abattoirs.

Days after the Aditya Nath Yogi government’s crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh, another BJP-ruled state, Jharkhand, decided to ban all illegal slaughterhouses in the state on Monday. The slaughterhouses were given 72 hours to shut their illegal businesses if they failed to obtain licence from relevant authorities.

SKG Rahate, principal secretary, home, issued an order to all deputy commissioners and SPs along with authorities of municipal corporations, municipalities and notified area committees to ensure that the closure was effected immediately. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, that has issued licences to 62 abattoirs across the country, has not issued the same to even one unit in the state.

None of the country’s 75 approved abattoirs-cum-meat processing plants or 34 approved meat processing units have permission from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority to operate. The Ranchi Municipal Corporation has, however, issued licenses to some slaughterhouses.

“Keeping in view safety and health of the general public, steps may immediately be taken for closure of illegal slaughterhouses. The principal secretary said that proper rules and regulations are already in place, issued by the department of animal husbandry, municipal bodies and health department,” the order stated.

With the issuance of the order, people engaged in the sale of goat meat or chicken will have to obtain licences from municipal bodies while those involved in slaughter of cows and buffaloes would have to close their “illegal” business. In 2004-05, the Jharkhand government had banned slaughter of cow and buffalo, violation of which invited imprisonment up to 10 years and a fine of Rs 10,000.

Ranchi Municipal Corporation deputy mayor Sanjeev Vijayvargiya said most abattoirs didn’t have a valid licence, and killing, selling or possessing cow meat was done in violation of the law.

Jharkhand is the seventh state where illegal slaughter has been banned under state legislature in the BJP regime there. Earlier, Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

Yogi Adityanath Reminds People Of 'Certain Responsibilities' In Gorakhpur.

At a shelter built for cows in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath sent a veiled warning to the people who sent him to Parliament for five consecutive times that they had "certain responsibilities" and needed to progress towards development. The words were yet another emphasis on the message of "discrimination towards none and development for all" that Yogi Adityanath -- seen for years as the BJP's mascot of Hindutva -- has been sending out since he was picked for the state's top job.

"The people of Gorakhpur have elected me repeatedly. However, the people have certain responsibilities too," the Chief Minister said in what was seen as a message advising restraint to his supporters. "There will be no discrimination with anyone... society will develop along with everyone. We all will progress toward a new development together," he added.

Yesterday, on his first visit to the place that has been his home since his teens, he had said, Josh mein aake hosh nahi khona chahiye" (Don't get carried away by the victory)". The priest-turned politician had pointed out that any move seen as an excess will be used by the opposition parties to scuttle Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development agenda.  

Gorakhpur has been the stronghold of the saffron-robed priest, who had taken charge of the huge temple and its charitable activities while in his 20s. But he and his followers have often been in news over various controversies. Yesterday, Yogi  Adityanath delivered a strong message that said now all will be treated as equals -- no distinction will be made on basis of "jaati" (caste), "mazhab" (religion) or "ling" (gender).

"There will be development for all but appeasement of none," he had said, in a dig at the erstwhile Samajwadi Party government, who were often accused of appeasing the minorities.

The Chief Minister -- for whom a visit to Gorakhpur temple's "gaushala" or cowsheds was a part of morning rituals -- has already asked the police to crack down on illegal slaughterhouses.

While the promise to shut illegal slaughterhouses was one made in the BJP manifesto, the overzealousness of the police had resulted in focus on all abattoirs, some of which got sealed on grounds as varied as lack of permit to draw groundwater and dysfunctional CCTV cameras.
